Once again, Sony is late to the ball and picky about who it will dance with. Geo-tagging and Geo location has been pet project of many outdoor enthusiasts for a number of years now. It looks as though the big boys are finally beginning to see the need for a convergence of GPS and photography. But Sony is missing the big picture again.
Sony will be releasing its new portable GPS receiver later this fall. The small 3.5-inch receiver will run about $150 and is designed primarily for geo-tagging your photos.
The device comes with Sony’s Image Tracker software which essentially does what Microsoft’s Location Stamper does, plot photo locations based upon timestamps and GPS tracks.
As would be expected of Sony, the device will only work with their Cybershot cameras and its Picture Motion Browser software. Sony claims that the device, which holds 31Mb of data, can be used to store around one month of tracking if used for 12 hours a day. They also claim that a single AA battery can power the device for 10 hours of continuous use.
