Notes: Titus 1:5

For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city as I directed you, (Titus 1:5)

Titus, who had been faithful in serving and growing the church of Corinth, has now been reassigned to a larger work on the island of Crete.

While in Corinth, he was growing under the discipleship of Paul and others. Now it is time for Titus to take on leadership in an expanded role.

His first mandate is to “set in order” what remains. This is an indication that some disorder existed. The lack of qualified leadership certainly indicated disorder.

With that in mind, Titus is to appoint elders, leaders in every city as Paul has directed. Leadership is to be local. Churches are not to be led by organizations distant from the work.  It should be noted that there wasn’t one great megachurch, but many smaller works.
