Notes: Titus 1:10

Commentary

For there are many rebellious men, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, (Titus 1:10)

Paul now goes on to list the types of persons that a pastor may have to refute with the word.

There are first those that are just plain disobedient.  The same word is used in Titus 1:6 in reference to the elder’s own children.  These are folks whose actions are in direct violation of God’s word.  Their selfish action represent a direct threat to the unity and growth of the local church.

There are those who like to tell all they know and to bring in anything they have ever heard to a discussion.  Their intent may not be the disruption of the church but the end result is such.  Their rumors and worldly philosophies represent an undermining, or indirect threat to the church.

There are those that intentionally spread deception within the body.  Their intent and actions, their end goal is disruption of the body.

Paul mentions that many of the deceivers come from the religious folks.  The threat then is not only from the outside, but from within as well.
