Notes: Titus 2:2

Commentary

Older men are to be temperate, dignified, sensible, sound in faith, in love, in perseverance.  (Titus 2:2)

Age matters.  Those with experience should set an example for those to follow.

It is expected that the older men of the church behave in a manner befitting their years.  They should be temperate, or sober.  Vigilant would be an appropriate alternative.  Their experience gives them insight into situations and allows them to see danger where others may not.  With that ability comes also the responsibility to defend and protect the congregation.  Paul is not talking about the elders of the church here.  He is indicting what is expected of the general congregation.

These older men are to be dignified.  When they speak, the words should be important, of value.  They should “act their age”.

They should be sensible.  They should be in control of their mind, not given to excess, or “fly by night” schemes and plans.

They should be sound in faith.  Their example is not just social, or physical, but spiritual as well.  Even as they get older, their faith needs to remain firmly grounded on sound doctrine.

They shouldn’t turn into grumpy old men.  They need to continue to love the Bride of Christ.

They are to remain firm, persevering to the end.
