Notes: Titus 2:5

Commentary

to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be dishonored. (Titus 2:5)

Again we find an emphasis on being in a “right mind”.  A wrong, fallen, fleshy  mind is hostile towards God and is not obedient (Rom 8:7).  Fallen nature doesn’t just affect our flesh and our hearts.  It affects our minds.  It affects the way we think.  Yeah, it builds a prison around us so strong that we cannot even will our way out of it.  But following salvation, we are to have the same mindset, the same attitude as that of Christ himself (Php 2:5).  We are to take every thought captive. (2 Co 10:5)

Pureness stretches past the purely physical, sexual relationship with a husband.  While that is expected, the purity extends to thoughts, words and actions.  A woman of pure mind, pure word is unlikely to cut down a fellow believer with gossip.

A wife’s responsibility is first to her own home.  Before meddling or discussing the affairs of other homes and households, she should ensure that her affairs are in order.

The NASB uses the word ‘kind’ but ‘good’ seems to be a better translation of agothos. One of the greatest attributes I can ascribe to my wife is that she is ‘good’.  She is a good woman.  She is a good wife.  She is a good mother.  She is a good helpmate.

Wives are to be subject, obedient, to their own husbands.  Earlier we saw that they were to love their OWN husbands.  When a man and woman leave their own families and are joined together in marraige, no longer is the woman to obey her mother’s husband, her father.  Her obedience is to be to her own husband. (Eph 5:22-24; Col 3:18)

And why should she do all of this?  For God’s glory.  The wife’s behavior reflects on God himself.
