Notes: Titus 3:9

But avoid foolish controversies and genealogies and strife and disputes about the Law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. (Titus 3:9)

In contrast, there are topics that have little or no value.

Foolish Questions

“Can God create a stone so big that he cannot lift it?”  This is a question designed to question God’s omnipotence.   But there are questions raised within the church that are just as foolish.

Genealogies

The Jews were very much about whose blood line they came from and under whom they studied.  This is no different from today, when pastors love to mention which seminary they attended or which pastor they love to emulate.  Instead of “I’m of the school of Hillell or Shammai” it is now “I attend John Piper’s conferences, or I attended DTS”.

Strife and Disputes over the Law

Should communion be weekly or quarterly?
Should members who drink alcohol be held under church discipline?
Should members be allowed to eat chicken at Hooters?
Is it ok to have a service on Saturday night?

Questions of these types do more to harm the body of Christ than to build it up.  Because of this potential for damage, believers are to avoid such discussions.
