Notes: 1 Timothy 1:2

To Timothy, my true child in the faith: Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord. (1 Timothy 1:2)

The letter is addressed to a man named Timothy. He was the son of a Jewess and a Greek, from the town of Lystra, located in present day Turkey. Timothy is first introduced as a disciple and maintained a good reputation with the believers in Lystra and Iconium (Acts 16:1-2).

Paul saw the potential in Timothy and desired to have him travel with him. In an effort to waylay any problems caused by Timothy’s mixed heritage, Paul circumcised Timothy (Acts 16:3).

From Paul’s writings, we find that Timothy was with Paul when the letters to the Romans (Romans 16:21), Philippi (Php 1:1), Colossae (Col 1:1), Corinth (2 Cor 1:1), Thessalonici (1 Th 1:1; 2 Th 1:1) , and Philemon (Phi 1:1). In a number of the letters, Paul indicated that Timothy would be coming to visit the addressees to re-teach doctrine (1 Cor 4:17), fact finding (Php 2:19), and encouragement (1 Th 3:2). Somewhere along the way, Timothy was arrested and then released (Heb 13:23)

With all of the folks that Paul met through his life, we only find two that he referred to as “my true child” in his writings. As he did with Titus (Titus 1:4), Paul begins by referencing his spiritual relationship with Timothy. Paul took a sincere interest in the discipling of these two young believers.
