Notes: 1 Timothy 1:9

Commentary

Knowing this, that the law is not made for a righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers, (1 Timothy 1:9)

Were mankind not in a fallen state, the law would not be needed. The fall of mankind left man in a totally depraved state requiring the law to control the lawless and disobedient natural man.

God in His mercy placed mankind under the law. The natural man, if left uncontrolled by the law, would wreak havoc upon himself, his environment, and civilization. Man, without the Law, reverts to his basest instincts. The ultimate end of Sin is Death. Death of the individual and death of the species. The law is for the unholy, the murderers of parents, murderers of other men, for the ungodly, for ALL sinners.

It is for this reason that Christ could come and die in our stead.  We, who by birth, are under the law because of our fallen nature and are unable to offer complete payment under the law.
